ABOUT SHUBMAN GILL

Shubman Gill is one of the leading batters of the new generation of Indian cricket. Born in Punjab, Gill rose from a small-town and farming-family background to become an international cricketer and, later, the Test captain of India.

Father – Lakhwinder Singh

Lakhwinder Singh played a major role in shaping Shubman's cricket career. He was an agriculturist and had once dreamed of becoming a cricketer himself.

Instead of allowing his own unfulfilled dream to end with him, he invested his time and energy in his son. He trained Shubman from childhood and eventually moved the family towards Mohali so that Shubman could access better cricket facilities.

BCCI records describe Lakhwinder as Shubman's coach from the beginning and note that he personally worked with him on his cricket and fitness.

THE STRUGGLE BEHIND THE SUCCESS

Shubman Gill's journey was not simply a story of natural talent. It involved years of intense practice, relocation, family sacrifice and dealing with setbacks.

One of the most difficult phases came before his first-class breakthrough. Gill suffered a side strain/muscle injury that kept him out for around two months and also prevented him from taking part in India A opportunities and Ranji matches.

The setback was frustrating, but Gill continued working towards his return. The ICC described this period as an important part of his development and highlighted the hard work behind his seemingly effortless batting.

Even as a teenager, Gill described extremely demanding training routines. BCCI reported that he could practise for several hours a day and work on both physical and mental fitness.

At the age of 14, he scored 351 runs from 277 balls in the Punjab Inter-District Under-16 competition. His innings formed part of a world-record opening partnership of 587 runs.
